With a score of 5.7 / 10 there is still a lot to be gained here. These are the most important conclusions from Moodmeter’s research into the experience of internal communication among 1,000 employees and people managers of companies with more than 250 employees from Belgium. The survey was conducted in October 2017.
Importance of internal communication
Successful internal communication ensures that employees:
• Feel concerned: if the communication brings them relevant messages;
• Feel heard: when they get answers to questions and when their opinion is taken into account;
• Feel better: if they can do their work better thanks to good communication;
• Feel respected: if an organization treats its employees as adults and knows how to deal with it honestly.
Where in the past the role of internal communication was mainly reserved for informing employees and providing guidelines, internal communication now plays an important role in communicating policy and strategy with a focus on participation and two-way communication. The mission of internal communication must therefore be redefined, adapted to the current climate of rapid change and high complexity.
Popular communication channels
Not only the purpose of internal communication has changed. The internal communication professional now has a choice of numerous channels to inform employees. Moodmeter investigated which resources are preferred by the employees and what the main reason for this is.

Digital tools are in third place in this research, but can be very effective and efficient. Large organisations often have thousands of employees around the world. Of course, there are many options for internal communication. But research shows that the chance is more than 75% that people will watch a video than read a newsletter, article or document.
